In May 2023, a song quietly appeared on the streaming charts. The song titled 'Gyeolmal (Ending)' was sung by Bidarae, a 22-year-old rookie singer-songwriter. This song, which he describes as "the ending of someone who had a toxic yet beautiful one-sided love alone," could have been just another ordinary breakup song if not for the last line 'it was unrequited love.' But that one line changed everything.
Bidarae is a stage name that literally translates the Korean phrase 'under the light.' While he chose this name hoping to become a singer-songwriter who always sings happily under stage lights, his musical philosophy runs deeper. "I think even the shadows under the light are beautiful. I want to capture everyone's bright and melancholic sides, all the various aspects in my music."
Bidarae's Story
Bidarae's music, which crosses indie, rock, and folk, is difficult to define by genre. He debuted in 2023 with the EP album 'Jebeop Geureol Deuthan Nal (A Pretty Decent Day)' and released his full album 'Kkotbyeong (Flower Vase)' in 2024, expressing that he's "living days that are mostly pretty decent." As he explains, "an album where I wrote pretty decent lyrics from thoughts that started with trivial things in repetitive daily life," Bidarae's songs originate from life's small moments.
Known for his shy personality, Bidarae is honest only in his music. In the song 'Gajogi Miwosseo (I Hated My Family)', he confesses, "I wrote it while reminiscing about the emotions of being spoiled during my adolescence." He also explained his song choice by saying that his past self who used to sit seriously in playgrounds wanting to act like an adult overlaps with his current self singing in playgrounds.
Bidarae, whom we met at Singing Playground, was truly an 'honest musician.' A total of 13 videos made 236,000 people stop to listen to his voice. Particularly, the full version video showed such appeal that 23,000 people watched until the end.
